Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) if the difference that makes a difference. According to Daniel Goleman (1998) who has popularised the concept within organisations, EI is the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships.

In a nutshell EI is about how we relate to ourselves and other people, but it isn’t about being nice all the time. People with high levels of EI are assertive without being aggressive. They can disagree without being offensive.

Dozens of studies in scores of organisations suggest that approximately two thirds of the abilities linked to superior performance are emotional or social qualities such as self confidence, flexibility, persistence, empathy and ability to get along with others. It’s about enhancing understanding to influence individual and organisational performance and to impact on that ever important bottom line.

More importantly EI can be developed through focussed effort, practice and feedback, which makes coaching the ideal medium to help develop EI. Both one to one and group programmes are available.
